Positive material identification (PMI) is an essential non-destructive testing (NDT) method utilized to verify that supplied materials conform to the proper standards and specifications. As a result, assurance can be gained that the chemical makeup of the metallic parts has the correct percentage of key elements.

PMI Testing Approach

Positive material identification (PMI) is performed using a handheld device. We have two methods at our disposal: X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) and optical emission spectrometry (OES). The XRF method determines the composition of the material using element-specific scattered radiation (X-rays). The OES method determines the composition of the material using the light spectrum emitted when surface material is evaporated using an electric arc. Both methods reliably determine the percentage composition of the elements in the compound.

Note: Due to procedural reasons, the XRF method cannot determine the carbon content.
